About Peter Flynn

CBA Lawyer Badge
The Honorable Peter Flynn is a retired Judge of the Circuit Court, Cook County Illinois. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School, and he practiced civil litigation (mostly complex business and commercial cases) for 30 years. He was appointed an Illinois Circuit Judge in 1999, elected in 2000, retained in 2006, and retained again in 2012 and 2018. As a judge, he served for 2 ½ years in the Commercial Calendar section of the Cook County Circuit Court’s Law Division, and then served in the court’s Chancery Division until his retirement from the bench in 2019. He is a life member of the American Law Institute, and he was an Adviser on its Restatement of the Law of Liability Insurance. He is a founding member and past vice-chair and chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Commercial Litigation Committee. He taught Illinois Civil Procedure at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago from 2002 until 2015. He firmly believes that mediation -- collaborative, confidential, and problem-solving -- is a more efficient, less expensive way to actually resolve disputes than litigation. Mediation allows and encourages the parties (not a judge or some other outsider) to craft their own solution.
